History of St. Catherine University
The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, under the leadership of Mother Seraphine Ireland, founded St. Catherine University (originally called the College of St. Catherine) in 1905 in St. Paul, Minnesota. The university is named for St. Catherine of Alexandria, a 4th-century Egyptian lay philosopher who suffered martyrdom for her faith. St. Catherine University offers degree programs through the College For Women, College For Adults (with gender-inclusive programs), and the Graduate College (which also offers gender-inclusive programs). Throughout its rapid growth this century, St. Kate’s has remained committed to the fundamental platform on which it was built – the university’s mission, heritage, and reputation for academic excellence.
“When you say, ‘I came through nursing at St. Kate’s,’ there’s a reputation where people just know that school’s been around a long time and that it’s a good program. Not only does it take a long time to build a program, it takes time to build the reputation that you produce quality RNs. That’s the reputation St. Kate’s has. And that’s something I definitely want to have when I graduate. I want that name behind me.“
